Masaomi Kida - probably my favorite character from Durarara!!
But everyone there is so awesome I couldn’t possibly pick just one though.
The review in one sentence: Durarara!! is one of the best short animes I’ve ever watched.
So, I’m gonna try and review this a bit more formally than I usually do - meaning dividing into categories instead of aimlessly thoughtspewing. :)
The story starts when Mikado Ryuukagamine, a boy tired of his ordinary life, decides to go to Ikebukuro, Tokyo to attend highschool with his childhood friend, Masaomi Kida. Sure enough, Mikado got what he wanted - Ikebukuro was certainly an interesting town. Gang wars, the underground, mass suicides, internet mysteries, and paranormal activity abound… I think it would be wrong to say that this anime was about Mikado’s story - it really is the story of Ikebukuro and it’s people - of friendship, of secrets, and of life in such a fascinating city. I have to say that it has one of the most intriguing and well-written plots I’ve come across - and is so different from anything I’ve ever watched.
The twenty-five episodes that took me to Ikebukuro have introduced me to what is probably the most interesting cast of characters in anime - I wanted to know more absolutely everyone. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Even the side-characters had their own quirks and motivations, and always managed to make you wonder why they act like they do, what their story is, and what drives them to make the choices that they did, and manage to be likeable. They were all kind of insane, and all of them were different from the usual anime stereotypes… the only thing I wish it had was more time to tell each character’s story and really flesh them out, but since this is a short anime, it does its job well - the characters are so fascinating, memorable, and tell you just enough about themselves and leave the rest to your imagination. Not only are the characters amazing individually, so are the relationships between them, and the way they interact with one another.
I have to say, this anime has really good opening videos. I also really liked the art style and character designs for everyone. The detailing in the backgrounds really make it feel like the characters are in the real-life Ikebukuro in Japan, and the way the random crowds are colored in plain gray really brings a sort of symbolism and make the important characters stand out more. Animation moves fluidly, action scenes are fast-paced and exciting, and the expressions of the characters were quite gripping.
I really do like the opening and ending themes, and the soundtrack is quite memorable and does its job of setting just the right mood and helps add to the anime’s atmosphere.
So, all in all… Durarara!! is a truly amazing anime. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s open-minded, likes interesting stories, and doesn’t mind watching something that will actually make you think about a lot of things - mostly life in general… or you know, just wants to watch something intelligent and full of pwnsome bad-assery.
from Durarara!! episode 23.
Because the semester is officially, finally over, I can really watch anime to my heart’s content again. :)
Durarara!! is one of the awesomest animes I’ve watched recently - it’s so unlike anything I’ve ever watched before…
…and has shown me how important truth is in a friendship. :”)
